There are few places in Africa that offer such unique opportunities for wildlife photography. Zimanga is one of those rare destinations.
Located in the wildlife-rich province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Zimanga combines exceptional photographic hides, exclusive wildlife encounters, and comfortable accommodation within a private reserve dedicated to creating extraordinary experiences for photographers. This journey is designed for those who enjoy spending time with a subject, observing behavior, waiting for the perfect light, and creating images that go beyond a traditional safari snapshot.
The heart of the experience lies in Zimanga’s world-renowned photographic hides, designed by the celebrated Hungarian wildlife photographer Bence Máté. Positioned around waterholes and natural wildlife corridors, these hides allow us to photograph wildlife from eye level and in complete comfort. Small birds, colorful bee-eaters, kingfishers, elephants, rhinos, and countless other species approach naturally, creating intimate opportunities that are rarely possible elsewhere.
One of Zimanga’s greatest highlights is its specialized nocturnal photography hides. As darkness falls across the African bush, an entirely different world awakens. Carefully designed lighting reveals fascinating nocturnal behavior while maintaining a natural appearance in photographs. Rhinos, elephants, hyenas, leopards, and other elusive visitors may appear throughout the night, offering unique photographic opportunities unavailable during daytime hours.
Beyond the hides, we will explore the reserve on game drives in search of some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife. Lion, cheetah, elephant, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and numerous antelope species inhabit the reserve. Working alongside experienced guides who understand both wildlife behavior and the needs of photographers, we can position ourselves for the best light, backgrounds, and compositions.
Depending on conditions and wildlife activity, there may also be opportunities to photograph animals from exceptionally low angles, creating dynamic perspectives that place the viewer directly into the scene. These encounters often produce some of the most powerful and memorable images of the entire trip.
Our home throughout the workshop is the exclusive Doornhoek Homestead, located within the reserve itself. Comfortable, peaceful, and surrounded by wilderness, it allows us to maximize our time in the field and respond quickly to changing weather, wildlife activity, and beautiful light. Early mornings, golden afternoons, and exciting nights all become part of a seamless photographic experience.
Throughout the journey we move at a photographer’s pace. There is no need to rush from sighting to sighting. Instead, we focus on quality encounters, spending time where the light is beautiful and the wildlife activity is unfolding naturally. It is an opportunity to slow down, observe carefully, and create meaningful images while enjoying one of Africa’s finest photographic destinations.
A chance not only to photograph Africa’s remarkable wildlife, but to experience it from perspectives that few photographers ever have the opportunity to enjoy.
Guided by Daniel Kordan. Dedicated for a small group of only 6-8 photographers and rotating Hides/Safari system.
Day 1, 28 October
Arrival to Durban and transfer to Zimanga
Arrival on a recommended flight to Durban airport. Alternatively you can arrive a day or two earlier and stay in the nice resort like The Capital Zimbali Resort. We will pick you up from here as well on the way from the airport. The road will take around 3 hours.
Upon arrival and good meal we will head straight to our first hide experience.
Zimanga’s hides are spread across several different habitats, each offering its own photographic opportunities and attracting a unique variety of wildlife. The reflection pools are among the most productive locations on the reserve, attracting kingfishers, bee-eaters, rollers, birds of prey, and countless other colorful species. Carefully positioned at water level, they allow for clean reflections and intimate eye-level perspectives that are difficult to achieve anywhere else.
The Lagoon Hide overlooks a wetland environment where kingfishers, herons, egrets, and other aquatic species feed and interact throughout the day. The constantly changing activity creates opportunities for both behavior and flight photography.
After sunset, the experience takes on a completely different character. Zimanga’s overnight hides offer a rare opportunity to remain in position throughout the night as wildlife visits nearby waterholes. Buffalo, rhino, elephant, hyena, and other nocturnal visitors can appear unexpectedly, often providing remarkably close encounters and unique photographic moments.
For those interested in birds of prey, the Scavenger Hide is a spectacular location. Vultures, eagles, and other scavengers gather in impressive numbers, creating opportunities to photograph dramatic interactions, powerful flight shots, and fascinating behavioral scenes that reveal an often overlooked side of the African ecosystem.
Days 2-8
Throughout our stay, we work in very small groups to ensure a relaxed experience and the best possible photographic opportunities. Whether we are in a hide or exploring the reserve by vehicle, everyone has plenty of space to work, freedom to compose, and personal guidance whenever needed. Small groups allow us to move quietly, adapt to changing conditions, and spend more time focusing on photography rather than logistics.
Over the course of our stay, we experience the full variety of Zimanga’s world-famous photographic facilities. We spend time in the reflection hides, where colorful birds, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and birds of prey provide endless opportunities for creative compositions and perfect reflections. We photograph wetland species from the Lagoon Hide, work with dramatic action and behavior in the Scavenger Hide, and enjoy several unforgettable sessions in the overnight hides.
The overnight hides are among the most unique experiences of the entire journey. As darkness falls and most safari vehicles return to camp, we remain immersed in the bush. Wildlife continues to visit the waterholes throughout the night, often providing close encounters with rhinos, buffalo, elephants, hyenas, and other nocturnal visitors. These sessions offer an entirely different perspective on African wildlife and frequently produce some of the most memorable images of the workshop.
When we are not working from the hides, we explore the reserve on game drives in search of its most iconic inhabitants. Lion, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe, zebra, and many other species roam the reserve, offering exciting opportunities for wildlife photography in beautiful natural settings. Every drive is different, and we remain flexible, following the best light and the most promising wildlife activity.
The rhythm of the workshop is designed around photography rather than a fixed safari schedule. Some days may be spent quietly waiting for the perfect moment in a hide, while others are filled with action and unexpected encounters. This balance allows us to experience the reserve from many different perspectives and return home with a diverse portfolio of images.
On our final morning on day 8, 4 November, we enjoy one last photographic session before leaving Zimanga and returning to Durban. After a final lunch and farewells, we transfer to the airport for onward flights, carrying home not only photographs, but memories of one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife photography destinations.
